This week’s spotlight is the chick flick The Princess diaries and is one of my favorite girl movies. It stars Anne Hathaway as Princess Mia and the wonderful Julie Andrews as Clarisse Renaldi, Queen of Genovia. The first film and its sequel are both directed by Gary Marshall and written by Gina Wendkos and the first film is based on the 2000 novel written by Meg Cabot. A year after the book was published, the film hit theaters and became a worldwide success. Last year both Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews said they would love to make a third movie, so fingers crossed!
The story is based on an unpopular, invisible girl Mia Thermopolis. Together with her Mother Helen and her cat fat Loui she lives in San Francisco, her father had passed away when she was little. Just before Mia turns 16, her grandmothers visits her for the first time and asks Mia to talk. Mia learns that her grandmother is actually Queen Clarisse of Genovia, a European kingdom and that she is Mia Thermopolis, princess of Genovia. And since her father is no longer there to take over the throne Mia, the invisible girl who gets bullied in school, is next in line to become the queen. The first movie is a very funny comedy film on how an outcast is transformed to rule a country.
The princess diaries 2: the royal engagement was just as a big success as the first. In the 2004 sequel it’s time for Mia to take over the throne. But there’s just one big problem, the Genovia law says that every crown princess needs to marry if they want to be queen. And for the just high school graduated Mia it’s a race against time to find herself a suitable husband. She only gets 6 weeks to get married if she wants to follow in her grandmothers footsteps. At the royal ball she meets several bachelors including the handsome Nicholas, ofcourse the guy she likes is not the person she thought he was. Nicholas and his uncle are only there to steel the crown from Mia so Nicholas will become king of Genovia. So Mia starts her search for a perfect husband. This second movie is not based on book and as a Julie Andrews fan and being a fan of her voice you’ll hear her sing a song with Raven Symoné.
Let me know what your thoughts are on these movies and if you would love a 3rd one.
Lots of love Roxana
